Do DHT Blockers Work?

What is DHT?

Hair loss is often an embarrassing and devastating blow to your self-esteem. It can be a confusing set of changes to your quality of life, and for some appears out of nowhere.

However, the main cause of hair loss has been identified – and it comes from an unlikely source. Research has shown that in the early stages of hairs, an enzyme called 5-Alpha Reductase is present in the hair follicles. This enzyme is responsible for turning testosterone in the blood stream into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT forms a barrier, effective starving hair follicles of nourishment. This can cause the strand of hair in the weakened follicles to fall out.

How Does DHT Impact Hair Loss?

DHT accumulates around hair follicles, where it binds to androgen receptors, triggering a shrinking of follicles, causing them to stay dormant. The purpose of miniaturising hair follicles is still unclear.

This leads to male pattern hair loss, which is the most common form of hair loss for men worldwide; women can also be affected by the same underlying condition.

The impacts of DHT on individuals will vary depending on genetic factors like sensitivity to hormonal changes, and environmental factors like diet and lifestyle. We do know that the effects of DHT stop hair from growing the same way as before.

Can DHT Blockers Help?

If DHT is known to be one of the major drivers behind hair loss, can blocking DHT prevent hair loss and balding?

The term ‘DHT Blockers’ is used to describe several products and techniques designed to reduce the effects of DHT on hair follicles. Some work to lower bodily production of DHT, whereas some prevent DHT binding at androgen sites at the follicles.

One of the most common prescription options around the world, Finasteride (sold as Propecia) works by reducing the production of DHT. However, changing hormonal balances can lead to several undesirable side effects. These side effects are so pronounced that Advanced Hair Studio has never prescribed this treatment—and never will. We do not recommend that our patients use Propecia.

Instead, Advanced Hair Studio prescribes products that inhibit the production of DHT by relying on naturally occurring substances, such as the herb Serenoa. These treatments are much safer, and come without the devastating side effects.

Our DHT inhibiting treatments include:

  • Advanced Hair Studio Hair Thickening Shampoo: Serenoa is a natural and effective means of altering the action of 5-Alpha Reductase, and in turn reducing DHT production. This Hair Thickening Shampoo and Serum is one of the first products to use this plant product to block DHT and promote hair growth.
  • Serenoa 320 Capsules: We also supply Serenoa capsules to our clients for an even more effective DHT blocking treatment.
  • Advanced Hair and Scalp Antioxidant: The vitamin and antioxidant of Milk Thistle, Resveratrol form Fallopia japonica, Zinc, Biotin, Silicon and Ascorbic acid inhibits DHT production while also working to protect the structure of hair and support healthy liver function.
